THAILAND, Ao Nang, Krabi, Bangkok

Today we got to Krabi.  It was a pretty short flight, only two hours. We took a taxi from the airport and drove into the jungle.  The car was really cool!!! It had rainbow lights on the ceiling and was cool because it was dark outside.  When we got to Ao Nang we got out of the car and walked up a ramp and turned right to our house! Our house was cool!! It had 2 big bedrooms, a kitchen and a nice bench instead of a couch.   We went to dinner at the resort restaurant and we were the only ones there! Then a German family came and sat next to us. After that we went back to our house and fell asleep.

The night van with the cool rainbow lights.
Walking to our house when we first got to Ao Nang.
Breakfast!! I drank a lot of that stuff. It was sweet and yogurty.

The next day it rained a lot so we did school and read our Kindles.  Then the rain stopped so we went to the beach in Ao Nang. We got to take the same night shuttle there!  We played on the beach and saw cats and Longtail Boats. Longtail boats are big long canoes with an engine at the end of a long pole. They are designed like that because they need to go into shallow water to pick up their passengers.  It also can glide through narrow passageways. The long shape helps it handle rough waves better, too. Then we went to a restaurant and there were local Thai kids there. We played with them for a long time. They are good at playing pool.  We couldn’t speak the same language, but it doesn’t matter when you are playing games, because the rules are the same in different countries and so you don’t really need to talk. And anyway, you can always know how people are feeling if you just look at their faces and into their eyes.

This is what a longtail boat looks like.
Pool sharks!!
It was fun to play with kids my age.

We went home and guess what?  We had to pack up, ALREADY????!!!!!!  Yes, because the house didn’t have what they advertised and it was going to rain EVERY DAY FOR 10 DAYS in a row!!!!! So after packing we went to the pool and had the best night!  We played and swam until late at night and had a great time.

We had so much fun swimming at night! We were the only ones there!
Our last meal in Ao Nang.

The next morning we went to the airport and flew to Bangkok.  When we got there we got in a taxi and drove to our AirBnb. We checked in then took the elevator up to the 12th floor to our apartment. When we got inside we settled in and went out to lunch.  We went to a place called Lon Lon. We ended up loving this restaurant and went there many times. I got mango sticky rice and steamed rice. Those are my favorite things to eat here. I also really like spicy food.  When we got back, we went to the pool. We also played basketball and tennis.

This is in Ao Nang while we were waiting for our Grab driver to pick us up and take us to the airport. Grab is like Uber.
Here we are in the apartment lobby. It had shops on the first level. Anna hurt her wrist, but she is fine.
Even though it was SO hot in Bangkok, we still played outside everyday. Our favorites were tennis, basketball and swimming.

Today we woke up and went on a boat ride.  We got in a tuk tuk and drove to the boat landing.  We decided to take a longtail boat. It was fun!! We did it until the afternoon.  On the ride we passed a guy feeding fish. There were so many and they were big, too.  It was a nice place to go fishing, I thought. After that we went to a temple called Wat Pho.  It is a famous place with a reclining buddha. The whole thing was made of gold!!! We walked around the temple complex for a while.  Mom had to rent a plaid temple skirt because her knees were showing because she was wearing shorts. I liked mom’s skirt. In temples you can’t show your shoulders or your knees. It is considered disrespectful.  When you are in another country, you have to respect their rules and their culture. Just because you do it one way at home, doesn’t mean it is okay in another country. After that we went home in a tuk tuk.  It was the most awesome tuk tuk ride ever!! It was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FAST. When we got back we went to Lon Lon and then went to bed.

The longtail boat ride. We went past the Grand Palace of Thailand’s Royal Family. Everyone respects them so much here. The King’s picture is EVERYWHERE IN THAILAND!!
In Thailand there is a floating market where people see stuff like this or hot food or vegetables right from their boat!!
It was fun seeing the people selling things in their boats.
Look at all the fish!!!! Easy catch!
These people were feeding the fish bread.
Wat Pho and the reclining Buddha.
Mom and her temple skirt that she had to rent so she would be allowed inside.
Wat Pho. There were a lot of monks there.
Our favorite Bangkok restaurant, Lon Lon!! Mango sticky rice!!

We got to see a lot of Bangkok.  There is a really cool park called Lumpini Park. Guess what lives in Lumpini Park!! Monitor lizards!!!!  They look like Komodo Dragons or alligators, can grow up to 9 feet and are dangerous if you go up close. But we kept our distance. We like to visit parks in every city that we visit. Lumpini Park in Bangkok and the Vomero Park in Naples are our favorites, so far.

A monitor lizard next to the lake in Lumpini Park. Thankfully they move slowly so we had time to move out of their path.
They look like Komodo dragons and glide through the water like alligators.
It was one of the coolest animals that we have seen on the trip so far.

Everyday in Bangkok we went to get street food.  The people cook on grills right in front of you. My favorite snack is meat on a stick. There is beef, chicken and pork. It is SO GOOD. One day we passed a famous chef.  Her name is Jay Fai. When she was little, she wanted to be a seamstress. She was very poor. But one day when she was sewing a fire started. Everybody had to evacuate. By the time the fire had stopped all of her tools were destroyed including her sewing machine.  She only had a little money left and started to work with her mom cooking street food. One day she risked all of her money to do something unique. She decided to use seafood and made a crab omelet and the person who bought it liked it a lot. Word spread. She started making more of them and other foods, too.  She opened a restaurant in 1980 right on the Bangkok street where she still is today. Overtime it became really popular and now you have to make a reservation at least three months in advance or wait 4 to 6 hours if you get picked by lottery. Now if you buy a crab omelet it is 1000฿ that converts to about $30! Wow isn’t that a lot??!!  But I think it’s worth it. She is 70 years old now. It was really fun to watch her in person and see her in action. It was even better than watching her on Street Food on Netflix!! Anyway, we found a beef stick(yay!) at a different street food stand and it was the best ever! Then walked to the subway and went home. By the way, the Bangkok subways are amazing!  They are sparkling clean and everyone acts polite. That night we watched a movie. Tomorrow we were leaving. I was sad to leave but I couldn’t wait to see our hotel. The hotel we are staying at is an airport hotel. That is a hotel that has a walkway right into the airport.

Look who is cooking!!!!!
It’s the famous Jay Fai!!! She was awesome to watch!!!
Here we are walking home in Silom. That’s near where our Bangkok apartment was located.
Here we are on the super clean Bangkok subway. The subway stations here are very orderly and don’t smell dirty like every other subway.
People wait in these lines and get on the subway really politely. It was NOT like that in Europe!!

Today I woke up and went to the pool with Mom and Anna.  We played their for a long time then went upstairs to our room.  We hung out their for a while then got our backpacks on and went to the taxi.  The drive was 30 minutes long and we finally got to the airport hotel. After that we got our swimming suits on and went to the pool, AGAIN and our suits were still wet from the morning.  We got dinner at the pool bar and played there for a while. After that we took a shower, read The Hobbit with dad and then went to bed.

This is the hotel pool. It was really warm.

Today I woke up and got room service, that was only the second time in my life we did that.  We got hot chocolate that wasn’t sweet, some pastries and miso soup for mom and Anna. Then I went to the gym with my mom.  Today we are doing homeschool all day and going swimming because on travel days like tomorrow we don’t have time for school. Tomorrow we have to get up really early because we are going to Cambodia!! I can’t wait to see ancient temples!

  1. That is really cool Cole! Sounds like you are doing way more cultural things than I did. We hung out at the mall in Bangkok a lot. Did you go to the one that is 5 stories and the last floor upstairs is full of kids stuff and the first floor is a food court? That was my favorite! We saw a crazy boy band there too!

Anyways, miss you and hope you enjoy Cambodia!

  2. Cole!!!! Hi! I love that you were playing pool with kids in Thailand. Those Monitor lizards are Terrifying. I’m glad they are slow. But I think I might have a nightmare of them tonight!
I am impressed that you ate that silkworm. Was it Crunchy? Did you try any other bugs? The colors there are so pretty and bright. I’m looking forward to eating the Thai food you learned to cook. My favorite dish is what I call Drunken noodle but I’m sure you know the real Thai name. It sounds like you have had a lot of exciting rides, Mr Tom’s wild ride, The Tuk-Tuk and the caravan ride with the lights on the inside! Can’t wait to hear about All your adventures.Where are you Now???
