Siem Reap, CAMBODIA

Today we woke up in Bangkok and went into the airport.  The flight was bumpy. When we got to Siem Reap, Cambodia we went to get pizza at a place called ToGo Pizza (we missed it).  IT WAS GREAT! WE HAD SAUSAGE PIZZA AND FOR DESSERT BANANA AND CHOCOLATE PIZZA. Then we came back to our apartment and watched a Halloween movie.  Then went to bed.

On the runway before the flight to Siem Reap.
The Cambodian visas are really cool looking!
This is my passport photo!! I was so little. This picture was taken the day Trump was elected.
There was a koi pond in front of our house. It was fun to watch them. Cambodia is in the tropics so there were also a lot of cool trees and cool bugs.

Today was Halloween.  Mom knew we were sad because we were missing it in Hermosa, so she bought candy at the store and hid it around the apartment.  We swam all day and then went up to search for the candy. I got a lot of candy, so did Anna.  We were so happy that we got to do Halloween. We dressed up as ninjas we also carved melons & pumpkins.  It was awesome.

We got a Boo Basket. It was really the stockpot from the kitchen cupboard, but it was filled with goodies and our “pumpkins”. (mine is orange Anna’s yellow)
Halloween candy!!!
Khmer ninjas and jack-o-lanterns.

Today we woke up at 3:45 A.M..  I was tired. We got on a bus and drove to a lot of temples.  The first temple was called Angkor Wat. To get there we had to cross a floating bridge.  We watched the sunrise their and stayed for a while. After that we got in the van and drove to another temple called Bayon pronounced by-on.  We stayed there for a while. It was awesome. It was like a giant maze. There was a bunch of bats in it. The next temple was called Ta Prohm (Tomb Raider) you might of heard of the video game or the movie.  I liked it because people forgot about it for a long time then found it collapsed and with trees and vines all over it. Then we went to a temple called Banteay Kdei. There were soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many bats.  After that we went home. I had such a great time today and I’m glad I got to see it.

We were looking for frogs while we waited for the sun to rise.
It was really pretty watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat.
Our guide took lots of family pictures of us.
This was inside the temple. These were for collecting rain from the rainy season and for bathing.
This is one of four large pools. They were Hindu sacred purification bathing pools.
This is Bayon. It had faces of kings and Buddhas carved in the stones. There were 216 faces!
This tree was so awesome at Ta Phrom!!
This is Bayon. If you look closely you can see faces in the stones.
Ta Phrom. My favorite temple. It is so cool. It looks fake.
Holding the face at Bayon.
This was one of the smaller buildings at the Angkor Wat complex.
There are really cool carvings and inscriptions in the walls at the temples.
I’m copying the Buddha face behind me.

Now I will tell you some things about Cambodia.  Cambodia is very different from the United States in many ways, but the colors of our flags are the same.

Flag of Cambodia. See the picture of Angkor Wat on the flag?? It is their most important site and it is the biggest temple in the whole world.

1. In Cambodia baby’s ride around on mopeds without helmets while the some parents have helmets on. A lot of kids ride on mopeds with their parents. Sometimes there are 3 or 4 kids on one moped with their mom!

We saw this kid by himself. There are a lot of kids alone around Siem Reap. There parents are around, but they are not like the parents in the US.

2. Not all of the roads are paved

This shows how a lot of their roads are. And this is in one of their biggest cities, Siem Reap. It also shows the awesome sky just before the storm hit. We were there near the end of the monsoon season so there was a lot of rain.

3. Kids don’t go to school till they are 7 & 8 but they have to go to school everyday, even Saturdays. And some kids have to become monks even when they are really little.

We had school on every weekdays, but only had to do school on some Saturdays when we were behind or traveled during the week and missed a day or two.

4. There are landmines on the border because one time there was an evil man named Pol Pot who treated the people who lived in Cambodia badly and put them there so people couldn’t leave.  One day Pol Pot called everybody for a meeting. He said all of the educated people come to one side and people who are not educated or resourceful come to the other side. He brought all of the educated people to a field and told his soldiers to shoot them, even children!  He did that because he wanted to take over Cambodia and to rule the people in a way that they can’t think for themselves. To this day there are still millions of landmines on the border of Cambodia and 20,000 people are injured every month because of them. Most of them are children just playing. They are training rats to scratch the area of dirt near the landmines so the humans can deactivate them.  They are called Hero Rats.

5.  Most people make a living by tourism and making or selling textiles (clothes/fabrics) or by working in agriculture.

These are all young bananas!!!!! There are so many banana, avocado, mango and lots of cool trees in the tropics!

Even though I learned some bad parts about Cambodia, I really liked being there and especially had fun in the pool and at the temples.

The pool was so awesome!! We almost always were there alone except when our friend Michael from Germany was there.
You guessed it!! Grilled FROGS!!!! They tasted like chicken. They are yummy, really yummy.
We loved Cambodia and hope to come back!! We are going to Vietnam next.
