Nara, JAPAN

Nara has wild deer roaming freely.

You’ll never guess what happened the next day!! We went to…NARA!!!!  Nara is a city south of Kyoto, near Osaka, that is known for wild deer roaming the city!  We were hoping to see a few and we probably saw a few thousand. They were everywhere. We fed them a special kind of cracker and acorns.  The cool thing is, that if you hold the food above their head, they will bow to you three times and then you give them the food. It was so fun and exciting.  We even got to see fawns! Also, it was mating season so some of the males were aggressive and were headbutting some peoples butts. It was so funny.

They are very tame.
I can’t believe this place is real!!

Nara used to be the capital of early Japan, so it has a lot of cool shrines and temples.  The Todai-ji Temple. The Todai-ji Temple is a famous Buddhist temple with the GREAT BUDDHA in it.  There is a little tunnel next to the giant Buddha that has a hole that you can try to crawl through that is the same size at the Great Buddha’s nostril.  If you can get through it, it means you have good luck and become enlightened.

The Great Buddha. See the nostril?
I fit through the nostril! I’m enlightened!

After that, we took the train back to Kyoto and dropped off mom and dad a few train stops before we got off the train.   It was their anniversary and they had plans for dinner. And we had plans for a sleep-over with our cousins!!

We made origami cranes to pass the time on the train.
Fun on the train back to Kyoto.
Saying goodbye to mom and dad. We will see them tomorrow!
